Twitter is finally going to be releasing Analytics tools which will allow users to learn which Tweets are most influential, which caused people to unfollow, what gained the most @mentions and retweets and a great deal more.
Tools, both paid and free, are available today and offer varying degrees of analytical data. Paid tools like Radian6 offer a great deal of data, but is designed more around researching topic profiles than determining your own effectiveness on Twitter. The free tools like Twitteranalyizer are good, but it sounds to me like Twitter Analytics will offer more beneficial information.
Most importantly, a free tool like this that is owned by the medium itself is likely to draw a lot of interest and drive many to actively participate in analyzing their Twitter accounts and learning which Tweets perform well and which perform poorly. Whether it is Twitter Analytics or some other service, it is something everyone who is serious about increasing their status on the social network should be doing. The fact that it will be so much more readily and obviously available will make analytics a staple of any Twitter strategy.
Word is Twitter has no plans on charging for the service, instead they are rumoured to have decided to keep it a free service for the foreseeable future. It has been widely thought that Twitter would unveil their analytics before the end of 2010. For now they have invited select users to try it out.
